What Is Laser Cataract Surgery?

Laser-assisted cataract surgery uses a femtosecond laser to perform several of the most delicate steps of cataract surgery with computer-guided precision. Before the procedure, a 3D image of your eye maps its unique anatomy so the laser can create precise openings, soften the cataract and help correct astigmatism.

For many patients, especially those choosing a premium lens implant, this added precision helps deliver a more predictable visual result.

Benefits of Laser-Assisted Surgery

  • Precise, consistent incisions guided by a live image of your eye
  • Gentle softening of the cataract, which can mean less ultrasound energy inside the eye
  • Correction of mild to moderate astigmatism during surgery
  • An excellent pairing with toric, multifocal and extended depth of focus lenses

What to Expect

Before

Your surgeon will perform detailed measurements of your eyes and talk with you about your vision goals and lens options. You’ll receive instructions for eye drops to begin before surgery.

During

Numbing drops keep you comfortable. The laser portion takes only a few minutes, and then your surgeon removes the cataract and places your new lens. The entire visit is outpatient.

After

You’ll go home the same day with a protective shield and prescription drops. Many patients notice brighter, clearer vision within the first few days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laser cataract surgery better than traditional cataract surgery?

Both techniques are safe and highly effective. Laser assistance adds precision to certain steps and can correct astigmatism, which is why it is often recommended alongside premium lenses. Your surgeon will help you decide which approach is right for you.

Does the laser hurt?

No. Your eye is numbed with drops, and most patients feel only light pressure during the laser portion of the procedure.

Is laser cataract surgery covered by insurance?

Insurance covers the cataract removal itself. The laser and any premium lens are usually an additional cost, and our team will go over pricing and financing options with you.
